N.C. Wyeth and the Golden Age of American Illustration and Microscape: A Studio Art Quilt Associates Global Exhibition

San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts: 1 Love St

5:30 pm - 4:00 pm

The San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts invites the public to celebrate its Grand Re-Opening with a free opening reception for its newest exhibits, N.C. Wyeth and the Golden Age of American Illustration and Microscape: A Studio Art Quilt Associates Global Exhibition on January 19, 2024 from 5:30 – 8 p.m. at 1 Love Street. Live music and refreshments will be provided.

Please join us in viewing the works that shaped our popular imagination in N.C. Wyeth and the Golden Age of American Illustration. This intimate selection of works from the collection of Joel and Suzanne Sugg and the Diamond M collection of the Museum of Texas Tech University, features seldom-seen paintings by N.C. Wyeth, the patriarch of the Wyeth dynasty of painters, his contemporary, Frank Schoonover, and their teacher, Howard Pyle.

Our known world stretches far beyond what we can see with the unaided eye. The art quilts in Microscape: A Studio Art Quilt Associates Global Exhibition are like paintings created in fabric. They explore a corner of the world at high magnification, capturing tiny wonders at the microscopic level, or by zooming in on a larger object to show its smallest details. The exhibits will run from January 19 through March 31 and are part of the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts’ Grand Re-Opening celebration.

The San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums. The museum is supported by generous contributions from both individuals and businesses. Our Grand Re-Opening celebration is generously sponsored by H-E-B, City National Bank, an Anonymous Supporter, Luther King Capital Management, Charles W. King Attorney at Law, Twisted Root Burger Company, Trimble-Batjer Insurance Associates, and Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices. For more information about SAMFA, go to www.samfa.org. Love to Learn: The Art of Ceramic Vases

The San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts: 1 Love St

9:00 am - 11:30 am

The San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts will host three Love to Learn classes in the first quarter of 2024. Each class will feature a special, hands-on, skill taught by prominent instructors. The Love to Learn classes are part of the museum’s Grand Re-Opening celebration.

Love to Learn: The Art of Ceramic Vases with Michelle Cuevas will be a two-part class and takes place on Saturday, March 16, 2024 from 9 – 11:30 a.m. and Saturday, March 23 from 9 – 11:30 a.m. in the Concho Clay Studio located in the breezeway at 1 Love Street. Refreshments will be provided.

The first session will consist of building a vase from a slab of clay, not with a pottery wheel. The slab-building technique involves rolling out clay to an even thickness, then cutting shapes, folding, bending, manipulating, and joining together to form a finished object. The second session will consist of using different glazes to “paint” the vase.

After glazing, the vase will be fired and ready to be picked up in a week. Michelle Cuevas was born in New Mexico but has lived in Texas almost 50 years. She learned her craft, in part, from local ceramic artist icons Roger Allen and Millicent and Jeremy Bundick. She has been “playing in the mud” for more than 25 years.

Register online today at www.samfa.org. Seating is limited! $100 per person. Take-home supplies provided.

The San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums. The museum is supported by generous contributions from both individuals and businesses. Clay Play Day with Ariel Bowman! 3 – 6 p.m. in the Education Studio at the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts.

About artist Ariel Bowman: “I make sculptures of prehistoric animals that represent the wonder to be found in natural history. I am intrigued by animals that evolved with distinct features, such as unfamiliar tusks, strange elongated limbs, and unusual proportions. I use clay to bring these extinct creatures back to life, sculpting folds of flesh and filling their bellies with air.” Ariel, the founder of SAMFA’s Concho Clay Studio, has been featured in SEVERAL of our past ceramic competitions and has also been an invited artist during our ceramic invitational. We are so excited to have her back in the studio to lead family activities! 25th San Angelo National Ceramic Competition April 19 - June 23, 2024 In Loving Memory of Darlene Williams The San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts hosts a juried ceramic competition every two years.
