Buffalo Soldier Day

Fort Concho NHL Commissary: 630 S Oakes St

2:00 pm - 3:30 pm

Fort Concho National Historic Landmark will celebrate the Buffalo Soldiers for Black History Month program on Sunday, February 22, 2:00 pm – 3:30 pm, at the fort’s Commissary Building, near Flipper and Burgess Streets. The program is free to all, and light refreshments will be available.

Noted military historian, Dr. John Langellier of Tucson, Arizona, will speak on “The Buffalo Soldier Regiments and Their Music,” covering the legacy of the black troops’ musical achievements across the West from 1866 to 1900. An author of several books on the Buffalo Soldiers, Dr. Langellier will speak on the often unknown role the black troops and their regimental bands had in building positive relationships between the troops and their nearby civilian communities.

Fort Concho served as the headquarters of the famed 10th Cavalry Regiment of black troops, and their regimental band entertained San Angelo citizens during their stay between 1875 and 1882. The regimental commander, Benjamin Grierson, gave the band extra attention and support as he was a musician in civilian life before joining the army.

After the program, a shuttle cart arrangement will take guests to Barracks 1, where a special exhibit covers the history of regimental bands featuring the musical instrument collection of Tom Railsback of Great Falls, Montana. A noted collector and musician, he collaborated with Dr. Langellier on a book, “The Drums Would Roll,” a history of military bands in the late 1800s. Tom and his family donated his extensive collection of instruments and research files to Fort Concho in 2025.

Also at Barracks 1, a special display on the history of the Standard-Times, a Buffalo Soldier exhibit, and a display covering the Comanches of Texas will be available. In addition, guests are welcome to visit the West Texas Buffalo Soldier Memorial across the street from the fort.

For more information, please call Fort Concho at (325) 481-2646.

  • Jesse Joe & the 96ers (https://www.jessejoe.co/) Description

This is the first show in San Angelo since Jesse Joe and the 96ers released their latest record, Cherry Bronco. His shows are a rockin’ good time!

About Jesse Joe & the 96ers Anyone who lives in the Midland-Odessa area knows the toll of the oilfields. It is hard, back-breaking work-the kind that makes a man want to collapse on the couch the second he gets home. Jesse Joe is that hard-working, blue-collar type, but with one major difference: when the shift ends, the music begins. Driven by ambition and a love for the craft, Jesse balances life on the rig with life on the stage. Fronting his band, JesJoe and the 96ers, he is currently touring in support of his latest record, “Cherry Bronco” (released February 26, 2026). Jesse’s passion materialized early, though in an unexpected genre. In 2011, he found his voice competing in rap battles at Pecos High School. Since 2017, however, he has been putting in long hours in the oil fields to provide for his wife and two children. Today, he channels that hustle into a unique country sound that honors his roots. Jesse Joe has already shared the stage with industry giants like Bad Bunny, Post Malone, and T-Pain, and recently landed a cameo in the hit Paramount+ series, Landman. Whether on a drilling rig or under stage lights, Jesse Joe is proud to share his story with the world.

Jesse Joe presents his music in a traditional Texas Country Music gravelly voice but his songs are closer to rock than country. His shows are energetic and where the party always is! Buy Tickets: https://www.stubwire.com/t/2g5icjiws3

  • Tylor and the Train Robbers (https://www.tylorandthetrainrobbers.com/) Description

Brothers Tylor Ketchum, Jason Bushman, and Tommy Bushman form the core of this musical powerhouse. Tylor, the eldest, takes the reins as the band’s frontman, rhythm guitarist, and songwriter, weaving stories through his lyrics. Jason, on bass and backup harmonies, and Tommy, on drums and vocals, provide the steady heartbeat and backbone that defines the band’s signature sound. Completing the quartet is Rider Soran, whose lead guitar, pedal steel, and lap steel chops add layers of depth and emotion to their music. The pristine arena-ready sound for all of our concerts is produced by the Musik Factory and Tradewind Sound.

About Tylor & The Train Robbers In the rugged expanse of West Texas, where history whispers through dusty winds and forgotten trails, the legend of notorious outlaw Black Jack Ketchum refuses to fade. Born Thomas Edward Ketchum in 1863 in San Saba County, Black Jack rose from humble cowboy roots to become one of the Old West’s most infamous train robbers, leading a gang that terrorized the Southwest in the 1890s with daring heists across Arizona, New Mexico, and West Texas. His life of crime intersected dramatically with Tom Green County-home to San Angelo-where he committed his first major offense: the 1895 murder of neighbor John N. “Jap” Powers in the small community of Knickerbocker, just southwest of San Angelo. Accused of the killing, Ketchum fled westward, absconding into the wilds near what is now known as Ketchum Mountain in Irion County, approximately 40 miles west of San Angelo (sources vary on exact distance, but it’s a ridge about 11 miles west of Mertzon, itself 26 miles west of San Angelo). This mountain, rising to about 2,741 feet, stands as a geographic echo of his name and legacy, whether named in his honor or otherwise tied to family roots in the region. Fast-forward over a century, and Black Jack’s shadow looms large over modern outlaw country music through the Boise, Idaho-based band Tylor & The Train Robbers. Led by singer-songwriter Tylor Ketchum-who proudly claims to be the great-great-grandson of the legendary train robber-the group channels the spirit of the Old West into twangy, storytelling anthems that blend Americana, country, and rock. The band’s name itself is a direct nod to Black Jack’s criminal exploits, particularly his gang’s multiple train robberies, including the infamous 1899 holdup of a Colorado & Southern Railway train near Folsom, New Mexico, which led to his capture after a botched solo attempt left him wounded and eventually hanged in 1901. The parallels between Tylor Ketchum’s band, Black Jack’s history, and the San Angelo area are as striking as they are poetic. Geographically, the connection roots in West Texas soil: Black Jack’s outlaw life took a pivotal turn in Knickerbocker, a quiet spot in Tom Green County where he worked as a cowboy before turning to crime. After the Powers murder, he evaded authorities by heading west toward rugged terrains like Ketchum Mountain, symbolizing a desperate flight across the same arid landscapes that now inspire Tylor & The Train Robbers’ music. The band, though based in Idaho, draws heavily from this Texas heritage-Tylor has spoken of his ancestor’s tales influencing the group’s identity, with their 2019 album “Best of the Worst Kind” featuring the track “The Ballad of Black Jack Ketchum,” a non-fictional recounting of the outlaw’s life, capture, and gruesome execution (where a miscalculated rope drop infamously decapitated him).

Thematically, the link to train robbing is unavoidable. Black Jack’s gang, including his brother Sam, specialized in holding up trains for payroll and valuables, embodying the romanticized yet brutal archetype of the Wild West bandit. Tylor & The Train Robbers mirror this in their moniker and lyrics, evoking a sense of rebellion and wanderlust. Songs like “Lost and Lonely Miles” and “Good at Bad News” from their discography paint pictures of outlaws on the run, much like Black Jack’s evasion through Tom Green County’s fringes. Tylor has shared in interviews that the family tie-verified through genealogical claims of direct descent-informs the band’s outlaw ethos, turning historical notoriety into musical narrative. Tylor & The Train Robbers’ sound is a raw, authentic force-gritty and soulful, with haunting melodies that carry a powerful, rebellious edge. Their music feels timeless and melancholic, deeply narrative-driven through Tylor’s deep-voiced delivery that’s both iconic and Americana-infused, channeling an outlaw spirit that’s heartfelt yet introspective. Resonant and brooding, with folksy undertones and a defiant streak, their tracks evoke dusty trails and shadowed canyons, pulling listeners into a world where the past’s echoes meet modern defiance. Attending one of their concerts is like stepping into a living legend: the air thick with energy as the band unleashes soulful riffs and haunting harmonies that build to powerful crescendos, leaving audiences captivated by the raw authenticity and gritty narratives. It’s a rebellious gathering, where melancholic ballads give way to defiant anthems, creating a timeless, introspective vibe that’s resonant and brooding-folksy tales of outlaws and heartbreak delivered with heartfelt passion, making every show feel like a defiant stand against the ordinary.

For San Angelo residents, this connection adds a layer of local pride to the band’s story. Tom Green County, with its history of frontier justice and cattle drives, served as the backdrop for Black Jack’s early crimes, and today, echoes of that era persist in cultural touchstones like the San Angelo Stock Show & Rodeo or the nearby Fort Concho historic site. Tylor & The Train Robbers, through their West Texas-rooted ancestry, bridge the gap between 1890s lawlessness and contemporary country music, reminding us that the spirit of the train robber lives on-not in heists, but in harmonies that capture the untamed heart of the American Southwest.

Fans won’t have to wait long to experience this live: Tylor & The Train Robbers are set to perform at the Arc Light Sports Bar & Grill inside the Clarion Hotel, 441 Rio Concho Dr. in San Angelo, on March 13.

Tylor Ketchum continues to tour and release music, including recent tracks like “Whiskey Preachin’,” his band’s saga proves that some family legacies are too wild to be left in the past. In a region where history and myth intertwine, Black Jack’s ghost rides the rails once more, courtesy of his purported descendant and a band that robs hearts with every chord. For the past decade, Tylor & the Train Robbers have been blazing trails, carving a path through the heartland with their roots country and Americana music. With boots worn thin from relentless touring, they’ve crisscrossed the country, honing their craft and delivering electrifying performances, leaving a trail of devoted fans in their wake. CALL 325-658-3434 FOR RESERVATIONS !! For a handful of summers about 30 years ago, tourists who wandered into a large dancehall in Stanley, Idaho, witnessed a family tradition finding new life. Young and old sat shoulder-to-shoulder, taking a break from the town’s mountain hikes and river campgrounds to take in Muzzie Braun and the Boys––a local family band who’d made it to the Grand Ole Opry, effortlessly spouted cowboy poetry and Western swing at gatherings around the country, and featured Muzzie’s four young sons––precocious boys with rock-and-roll futures. “There were kids running around, people dancing,” says Micky Braun, the youngest brother who first climbed on stage to join the family when he was about five years-old. “Gary and I’d get up and play a couple of songs, then we’d get off and the older brothers would stay up and play a couple more. It’s pretty funny, looking back on it.” He laughs a little, then adds, still smiling, “That’s how we got started playing.” The Braun brothers never stopped. Big brothers Cody and Willy started Reckless Kelly, and Micky and Gary left Idaho for Austin and started Micky and the Motorcars, a road-dogging favorite whose nonstop tour for the last 17 years has defined not just the lives of the brothers, but also shaped Austin’s roots-rock resurgence that has played out over the last two decades. With their anticipated new album Long Time Comin’, the Motorcars cement their place as elder statesmen of that alt-country scene who have managed to master that ever-elusive blend of artistic familiarity and surprise. “I hope people take the time to hear the album as a whole, and I hope they like it,” Gary says from his home in Austin. “I think this one is a little bit better.” He pauses and laughs as he drawls, “So I hope they like it a little more.” For the Motorcars, the question is never really whether to tour but where to play next. Gary––who handles guitar, mandolin, harmonica, harmonies, and occasionally lead vocals––and Micky, lead vocalist and acoustic guitarist, are joined in the Motorcars by Andy Carrell on bass, Bobby Paugh on drums and percussion, and new bandmate Pablo Trujillo on guitar. The combination of familiar and fresh players has reinvigorated the Motorcars’ live show, which buzzes through a low-key rock-and-roll rapture built on grooves and the Brauns’ signature harmonies.

About the Smokin’ Oaks The Smokin’ Oaks are a 4-piece band from Yukon, Oklahoma, who started in early 2023.Starting at a young age, relatives of Grady Cross (Cross Canadian Ragweed) Slaid Cross (Lead Guitar & Harmony Vocals) and Colton Blake (Vocals & Rhythm Guitar) joined together with Noah Morris (Drums & Percussion), and Conner Pattison (Bass Guitar), and have been dreaming big and working hard to build the foundation of something great.
